Shifting the Focus: Embracing 'Joy Over Shame' in School Technology Use
This holiday season, every single thing I’m looking forward to involves a screen-free experience. I crave moments of simply being—in my body, with the people I love, fully present in the moment. I want to savour real connection, without the constant pull of digital distractions.
But for so many in the school community, these simple joys often feel out of reach as the relentless pull of screens makes it harder to experience life as it happens.
On top of that, students in North America are frequently told that technology is harmful, yet they see the adults in their lives constantly glued to screens. This mixed message can be confusing and difficult to navigate.
But what if we shifted the conversation?
What if, instead of focusing on the shame around technology, we focused on the good?
Imagine a world where we guide students to choose when to disconnect, not because tech is inherently bad, but because being present in the moment—without the constant distraction of screens—is a source of real joy and fulfillment.
What if, we celebrated the joy that comes from intentionally limiting screen time, embracing presence, and deepening real-life connections?
What if, we show students that it's okay to say "no" to the pull of tech—not because it’s bad, but because there’s something even better waiting for them in the real world.
This is the core of JOMO(campus): helping school communities find balance by prioritizing meaningful experiences over digital noise. Instead of a “don’t” mentality, JOMO offers a “do” mentality—encouraging joy, connection, and creativity in a way that feels empowering, not shameful.
It’s not about banning technology; it’s about using it thoughtfully, for the moments that truly matter.
JOMO(campus) offers a joyful, comprehensive programming that nurtures a healthier, more connected school culture that:
Fosters a shared commitment to well-being among staff, students, and families.
Offers practical, evidence-based tools with measurable results.
Aligns with educational values of wholeness and authentic connection.
At the heart of our work is JOMO—embracing the joy of missing out. By prioritizing presence, joy, and authentic connections over the endless digital noise, we help students rediscover the beauty of the moment.
Part of that rediscovery involves embracing boredom as a “brain break”—teaching students that moments of stillness aren’t empty, but essential. These pauses allow their minds to recharge, nurturing creativity, self-reflection, and awareness in ways that constant stimulation never could.
Did you know?
Schools that implement digital wellness programs often experience a 20% boost in student focus and engagement within the first semester, according to a 2021 report from the Center for Humane Technology.
Eastern Christian School is already seeing the benefits. Principal Dan Cirone shared: “JOMO makes going phone-free feel so natural, even exciting.”
